Our Story
A home founded on
unhurried kindness
Bik Wan grew from a simple conviction: that older adults deserve a place where the day is never rushed and where every person is known by name.
Back to HomeHow We Began
From a family conversation to a community home
Bik Wan came about quietly, the way most lasting things do. In 2017, the Wong family — long-time Mid-Levels residents — found themselves searching for a place where their elderly mother could live with both companionship and independence. The options available at the time felt either too clinical or too large. What was missing, they felt, was a home with a human scale: a place small enough that each resident mattered, and comfortable enough that the word "routine" felt like reassurance rather than restriction.
They converted the upper floors of a Conduit Road townhouse, working closely with a group of experienced senior lifestyle practitioners. The idea was modest: to offer a handful of residents a daily rhythm built around meals together, gentle outings, and the kind of steady, familiar support that only a small team could give. The name Bik Wan — 碧灣, meaning "jade bay" — was chosen for the sense of stillness it calls to mind: clear water, open sky, a place where time moves at its own pace.
Since those early years, the community has grown carefully, adding residents and support options one at a time. What has not changed is the founding belief that the best senior living is shaped around the individual, not the institution.
Our Mission
A clear and steady purpose
Our purpose at Bik Wan is to give every resident a daily life that feels genuinely their own. This means listening carefully to what each person values — whether that is a quiet afternoon in the reading room, a familiar walk to the market, or simply the knowledge that a trusted face is nearby.
We do not pursue scale for its own sake. A small community allows us to notice what a larger one would miss: a change in appetite, a preference for a particular chair by the window, the need for a little extra help on a difficult day. These things matter, and they require the kind of attention that only comes with continuity.
Bik Wan holds membership with the Hong Kong Association of Gerontology and operates in accordance with residential care guidelines issued by the Social Welfare Department. Our care standards are reviewed regularly by an independent advisory panel with backgrounds in elder welfare and community services.

The People Here
The team residents see every day
Our team is small by design. Each member stays long enough to become a familiar presence — to know which residents prefer their congee plain and who likes a newspaper with breakfast.
Margaret Wong
Residence Director
Margaret co-founded Bik Wan and has spent over two decades working in elder lifestyle services in Hong Kong. She sets the tone for how the community feels day to day.
Kevin Lam
Senior Host
Kevin has been with Bik Wan since the first year. He leads the daily support team and accompanies most group outings, knowing every resident's preferred pace and interests.
Yvonne Chan
Community & Outings Coordinator
Yvonne plans the calendar of outings and community gatherings, keeping each programme relevant to the interests of current residents and the rhythm of Hong Kong's seasons.
How We Work
Standards that guide every day
Resident-Centred Assessment
Each resident's preferences, routines and support needs are assessed at entry and revisited regularly, so services stay aligned with how life actually feels for that person.
Privacy & Dignity
Personal information is held in strict confidence. Rooms and personal spaces are respected at all times. Staff are trained to knock, ask, and wait — always.
Safety & Building Standards
The Conduit Road building holds current fire safety certification and is inspected annually. All common areas are designed with step-free access and good lighting.
Ongoing Staff Development
All team members complete regular training in elder communication, gentle assistance techniques and cultural sensitivity. New staff shadow experienced hosts before taking independent shifts.
Open Family Communication
Families receive a monthly written summary of their relative's activities and any notable changes. The residence director is available by phone for questions at any time during office hours.
Nutrition & Dining Care
Meals are prepared daily by an in-house cook with attention to dietary preferences, cultural traditions and seasonal ingredients. Residents are encouraged to share their preferences openly.
Senior lifestyle living in Mid-Levels, Hong Kong
Mid-Levels occupies a particular place in Hong Kong life — elevated above the busy harbour districts, yet connected to them by the city's famous escalator and a dense network of minibus and taxi routes. For older residents who value access to familiar neighbourhoods without the exertion of city-level traffic, the location is well suited.
Bik Wan draws on this setting deliberately. Conduit Road is quiet, lined with mature trees and within an easy ride of the harbourfront promenades, the wet markets of Central, and the hillside temples that many long-term Hong Kong residents hold dear. Outings from the residence are shaped around these destinations, keeping each resident connected to the city as they have always known it.
Daily support designed for real life
The support offered at Bik Wan is shaped around the realities of daily life rather than standardised schedules. Some residents draw on our services for a few tasks each week — laundry, errands, a tidy of their personal space — while others prefer the peace of the Complete Residence Living arrangement, where the full round of daily life is looked after by a single familiar team.
What both approaches share is a deliberate quietness. Bik Wan does not operate like a hotel or a medical facility. It operates like a well-run home — where people know each other, where meals are shared with conversation, and where the end of the day brings a comfortable and familiar setting to return to.
